With nearly 200 installations, performances, events, and activations in tow, the multi-week festival takes over uptown once again April 1-17. It’s a long-awaited return for Charlotte Shout! But that’s why its charge, to showcase our community’s creativity, innovation, diversity, and resilience, is so important in 2022.It does just that with what organizers call its “pillars”—art, food, music, and ideas. Highlights from its ever-updated and expanding schedule of activities hint at the massive scope of this year’s festival. Nearly all of the events are outdoors, free, and open to the public without tickets.
Live Music on the Ally Main Stage
Charlotte Ideas Festival takes place from April 3 to 5, 2024. It features a range of thinkers and innovators exploring a wide rang of topics. In addition, food trucks will be on hand throughout Charlotte SHOUT. It is presented by Charlotte Center City Partners. And if you want to be inspired by the art in a different way, register for yoga classes on The Green, and take in the sights of SHOUT!
Ally Main Stage at First Ward Park
Sing and dance to this family-friendly, vaudevillian-style show, presented by Children’s Theater of Charlotte. Based on the “Elephant & Piggie” books by Mo Willems. New York Times bestselling author and “CBS News Sunday Morning” correspondent, David Pogue, explores what a post-robot, post-AI word looks like, discussing the societal and individual impacts. These Uptown buisnesses will have a special SHOUT! Deal, or a fun suprise just for the duration of the festival. Is produced by Charlotte Center City Partners.
Discovery Place: Space and Eclipse Activities
Come enjoy this beautiful and colorful installation of 30 unique hand painted birdhouses with centuries old Mandala Art. Mandalas, intricate geometric patterns that symbolize the universe’s harmony, serve as the heart and soul of this project. Artist Anuja Jain has added freehand painted unique distinct mandala patterns, along with some sustainable features on each of these birdhouses to give them an aesthetic look and sensory feel. People are encouraged to stop and pay attention to the carefully selected birdsongs playing in the background to get a sense of harmony and energy flow through all these pieces. Artist also encourages gentle touching to get the feel of 3d patterns used on these pieces.
Across the street from the park is the 7th Street Market, housing new businesses trying to get off the ground. They include Geno D’s Pizza, whose owner said the profit from this event every year is simply incomparable. The festival is produced by Charlotte Center City Partners and presented by Atrium Health and Bank of America. Last year, over 1.8 million people visited Uptown during the 17 days of the festival.

You’ll find those performances at the aforementioned Ally Main Stage at First Ward Park, Victoria Yards, lunchtime concerts at Cafe 400, and other corners of Uptown. There will be several daytime performances that are family-friendly, while parents can also make an evening of it for nighttime adventures. One popular musical event making a return this year is “Pianodrome,” is the world’s first amphitheater made entirely from upcycled pianos.

The putt putt golf course — I mean, where do you want me to stop? The streets and parks around uptown Charlotte look a little different this weekend. Where once there was plain grass or pavement, a colorful new crop of sculptures, interactive art installations and "streateries" has sprouted — seemingly in time with the spring daffodils. An amphitheater made of pianos — The "Pianodrome" just inside Grace A.M.E. Zion Church is both a sculpture and a performance venue. A team led by Scottish musician and artist Matthew Wright made the amphitheater out of 50 deconstructed pianos.
